Our week: KG 1, week 16
Dates: to · Try one activity on a day that suits you. Repeat or pause any part.
Reading & talking
Do: Read and match letters. Write jam, van, web, yes and zip, choosing words whose other letters your child knows. Help them sound out and say each word. Beside the new lower-case letters write J, V, W, X, Y and Z, then match each capital with its partner.
You need: Paper and a pencil
Talk: Which capital letter matches this small letter?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Letter Pop
Writing & pencil control
Do: Give each idea a line. Write a shared poem with one chosen phrase on each line. Your child adds a familiar letter or word. Say one word slowly to help them hear a sound they can write. You write the unfamiliar parts using their chosen words.
You need: The paper and a pencil
Talk: Which sound could you write in that word?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Trace It
Numbers & shapes
Do: Kitchen shape hunt. Explore the ball as a sphere, the box as a cuboid and the cup as a cylinder-shaped object. An adult can roll paper into a cone and hold it closed for comparison. Explain that real objects may only be like a mathematical shape.
You need: An intact ball, a cardboard box and an unbreakable straight-sided cup
Talk: Why does a ball roll?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Shape Detective
Science & our world
Do: A materials page. Draw two objects and add a material name and one describing word to each, writing for your child as needed. Look at the objects again another day and check the descriptions. Ask whether a new word would make either description clearer.
You need: Paper, crayons and the objects
Talk: What can your eyes and hands tell you about it?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Five Senses
Thinking & feelings
Do: Was that useful? Draw together. Ask what help your child wants with one part, then offer it. Check whether that helped or whether they want something different. Let them say, "Together, please," or point. Thank them for showing you what they needed.
You need: Paper and crayons
Talk: Shall I show you or do it with you?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Feelings Friends
Moving & making
Do: Help the visitor feel welcome. Pretend the visitor feels worried about waiting. Ask what might help, such as explaining whose turn comes next or letting a carer stay beside them. Use your gentle cue to invite the toy forward. Swap roles and let your child show another possible feeling.
You need: The toy, role signs and sound makers
Talk: How can our calling sound stay gentle?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Helper Heroes
A possible rhythm: one or two strands a day, on the days that suit you. Swap days freely. Games are optional and never replace the home activity.
