A Poem of Things I Notice

Goal: Choose words for a short list poem and contribute familiar letters to shared writing.

For parents: A list poem puts chosen words or phrases on separate lines. It need not rhyme. Start with two lines about things your child notices at home. They choose the words and write known letters; you supply the rest. Read the poem for pleasure, without requiring a performance.

Do together

  1. Collect two details

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Look around where you are sitting. Your child chooses two things to mention, such as a soft mat and a bright cup. Say each phrase together. Draw a quick reminder of each one.

  2. Give each idea a line

    You need: The paper and a pencil

    Write a shared poem with one chosen phrase on each line. Your child adds a familiar letter or word. Say one word slowly to help them hear a sound they can write. You write the unfamiliar parts using their chosen words.

  3. Read and choose

    You need: The poem and crayons

    Read the two lines aloud, pointing as you go. Ask whether your child wants to swap a word, perhaps bright for blue. Make their chosen change together. Add a drawing and share the poem with someone at home if they wish.

Talk about it

  • Which two things would you like to describe?
  • Which sound could you write in that word?
  • Which words do you want us to keep?
