One Small Step with Something New

Goal: Name a feeling about an unfamiliar activity and choose a small first step with an adult.

For parents: Something new can feel exciting, worrying or both. Watching counts as a first step. Let your child choose whether to join, ask for company or stop. Use a safe activity at home; no surprise visits, tasting or pressure to be brave are needed.

Do together

  1. A character tries something new

    You need: Paper and crayons

Draw Sara seeing a paper-folding activity for the first time. Ask how she might feel. Draw two choices: watch you fold, or hold the paper with you. Your child chooses a first step for Sara; either choice is welcome.

  2. Choose my first step

You need: A sheet of scrap paper

Offer to fold a paper fan together. Let your child watch, hold an edge or help with one fold. Name a feeling only if they want to. Stay beside them and stop when asked; finishing the fan is optional.

  3. Tell what helped

    You need: Paper and crayons

Draw or describe the step your child chose. Ask whether watching, company or trying helped. They may choose the same step another day, a different step or a pause. Explain that feeling unsure does not mean they did anything wrong.

Talk about it

  • How might Sara feel?
  • Which first step would you like?
