More Letters: j v w x y z

Goal: Link j, v, w, y and z to familiar sounds, and hear the two sounds represented by x in box.

For parents: Use j as in jam, v in van, w in web, y in yes and z in zip. In box, x represents two sounds, /k/ followed by /s/. Introduce a little at a time alongside known letters. Other uses of these letters can wait; practise these examples first.

Do together

  1. Letter and picture partners

    You need: Paper and crayons

    Write j, v, w, y and z on separate large pieces. Draw jam, a van, a web, a person nodding yes and a zip. Choose two pairs at a time. Say each word naturally, listen to its first sound and place its letter beside the picture.

  2. Hear the end of box

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Write box. Say its sounds /b/ /o/ /k/ /s/, then blend them into the word. Point to b, o and x as you explain that the final letter writes the last two sounds together. Try fox with help. Do not call x a single sound here.

  3. Read and match letters

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Write jam, van, web, yes and zip, choosing words whose other letters your child knows. Help them sound out and say each word. Beside the new lower-case letters write J, V, W, X, Y and Z, then match each capital with its partner.

  • Which letter writes the first sound in van?
  • What two sounds can we hear at the end of box?
  • Which capital letter matches this small letter?
