Before Food Reaches the Shop

Goal: Link a few familiar foods to plants or animals and describe how a farmer helps.

For parents: A shop is one stop in a food's journey. Mangoes grow on trees; wheat grains can be ground into flour for wheat roti. Dairy milk can come from cows, buffaloes or goats. Use drawings only; children need not handle raw flour, grains or animal products. No tasting or cooking is needed.

Do together

  1. Match food to its beginning

    You need: Paper and crayons

    Draw a mango tree with fruit and a mango ready to eat. Connect the pictures. Next draw a cow and a container labelled cow's milk. Explain that these foods began with a plant or animal before anyone carried them to a shop.

  2. A wheat roti journey

    You need: Paper and crayons

    Draw wheat growing, wheat grains being ground into flour, and a finished wheat roti. Put the drawings in order together. Explain that adults also mix and cook the roti; the pictures show only a few steps. Help your child retell the journey.

  3. Who helps it grow?

    You need: The drawings and crayons

    Add a farmer beside your crop drawing. Talk about planting, watering and gathering a crop. Your child draws one helpful action. Ask what might happen before food reaches a shop. Explain that different people can do different parts of the journey.
