Press, Roll and Join
Goal: Use both hands to shape soft material and combine simple shapes into a small model.
Do together
-
Change a lump
You need: Soft dough or paper, and a washable work surfaceShow how to press a lump flat, roll it gently between palms and squeeze an edge. Let your child try two actions and describe the shapes. With paper, crumple a ball and flatten a sheet instead. Stop when hands need a rest.
-
Join two shapes
You need: The same materialMake a broad flat base and a short rolled piece. Press the piece gently onto the base to make a pretend garden seat or another small model. Help one hand steady the base while the other joins. Paper pieces can rest together without glue.
-
A model with a purpose
You need: The model and spare materialInvite your child to add a shape that helps tell what the model is, such as a low wall beside a seat. Ask why they chose that shape. They can reshape one part or leave it as it is. No finished example needs copying.
Talk about it
- How did pressing change your shape?
- Which hand could keep the base steady?
- What does this added shape do?
