Our week: KG 1, week 14
Dates: to · Try one activity on a day that suits you. Repeat or pause any part.
Reading & talking
Do: Letter and picture partners. Write j, v, w, y and z on separate large pieces. Draw jam, a van, a web, a person nodding yes and a zip. Choose two pairs at a time. Say each word naturally, listen to its first sound and place its letter beside the picture.
You need: Paper and crayons
Talk: Which letter writes the first sound in van?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Letter Pop
Writing & pencil control
Do: Give and read. Help your child give the card to its reader at home. Invite them to point to a letter they wrote and explain the picture. The reader can read the message back. Add a final mark or word only if your child wants.
You need: The finished card
Talk: Which letter would you like to write?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Trace It
Numbers & shapes
Do: Which feels heavier? Offer one object for each hand while your child is seated. Ask which feels heavier, then swap hands and compare again. Choose objects they can comfortably lift. Try another pair and say heavier or lighter.
You need: Two light, safe household objects, such as a sock and a book
Talk: Which is heavier, the book or the pencil?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Size Safari
Science & our world
Do: Object and material. Name each object, then name its material. Ask your child to look and touch gently. Choose words such as soft, smooth, stiff or bendy. Notice that the name of the object tells us what it is, while the material tells us what it is made from.
You need: A whole cloth, sheet of paper, smooth wooden spoon and unbreakable plastic cup
Talk: What is this object made from?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Five Senses
Thinking & feelings
Do: One next step. Recall a small changed plan, or invent one. Listen to your child, then offer two available choices, such as drawing together or looking at a book. Choose one together. Explain that doing something else does not mean the disappointment must disappear.
You need: Paper and crayons
Talk: What could we choose together now?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Feelings Friends
Moving & making
Do: Help the visitor feel welcome. Pretend the visitor feels worried about waiting. Ask what might help, such as explaining whose turn comes next or letting a carer stay beside them. Use your gentle cue to invite the toy forward. Swap roles and let your child show another possible feeling.
You need: The toy, role signs and sound makers
Talk: How can our calling sound stay gentle?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Helper Heroes
A possible rhythm: one or two strands a day, on the days that suit you. Swap days freely. Games are optional and never replace the home activity.
