A Card for Someone

Goal: Choose a reader for a card and form familiar letters within a short shared message.

For parents: A card can thank someone or simply say hello. Choose a person your child knows. Let them decide the message and write any letters or words they can; you write unfamiliar parts. Names can need spellings not yet taught. One short phrase is enough.

Do together

  1. Choose our words

    You need: Paper and crayons

Fold paper together for a card. Ask who will receive it and what your child wants to say, such as hello to Eva or thanks to Abba. Say one short phrase. Your child chooses a picture that belongs with their message.

  2. Add our message

You need: The folded paper and a crayon

Write the chosen phrase together inside. Invite your child to form a familiar letter or word while you supply the rest. Add who it is from, sharing the name writing if needed. Point to the words and read them aloud.

  3. Give and read

    You need: The finished card

Help your child give the card to its reader at home. Invite them to point to a letter they wrote and explain the picture. The reader can read the message back. Add a final mark or word only if your child wants.
