Show Me Where You Need Help

Goal: Show or say what is difficult and ask a trusted adult for useful help.

For parents: Your child can ask at any point; they do not have to struggle first. Pointing, gestures and home languages all count. Name a possible feeling without deciding it for them. Practise with you nearby and a manageable task, never by hiding needed help.

Do together

  1. A drawing needs help

    You need: Paper and crayons

Draw a pretend child, Ali, trying to draw a bus. Ask how he might feel if he needs help with the wheels. Model, "Please show me a circle." Let your child speak for Ali or point to the part that needs help.

  2. Choose the help

You need: A sock and an unbreakable cup

Offer a simple job: fold the sock and put it beside the cup. Invite your child to ask you to show a step, do it together or explain again. Give the help they choose; there is no need to finish alone.

  3. Was that useful?

    You need: Paper and crayons

Draw together. Ask what help your child wants with one part, then offer it. Check whether that helped or whether they want something different. Let them say, "Together, please," or point. Thank them for showing you what they needed.

Talk about it

  • How might Ali feel?
  • Which part would you like help with?
