Reading & talking

Building Longer Words
Week 3 of about 4

Do: Syllable split. Say garden, morning or rocket and clap the spoken syllables. An adult writes each part on a separate large card. Read the parts together and put the cards side by side to read the whole word.

You need: Longer word cards (garden, morning, rocket, sandwich)

Talk: Can you make a new compound word?

Writing & pencil control

Neat Handwriting
Week 3 of about 5

Do: Letter families practice. Choose two or three letters with a similar movement, such as c, a and d. Model the starting point and direction. Let your child try each a few times, then choose one they find easy to read. Stop before their hand becomes tired.

You need: Paper and a pencil

Numbers to 100: Tens and Ones
Week 3 of about 4

Do: Number patterns. Start at 3 and jump 10 each time: 3, 13, 23… What stays the same? Then try counting back in tens.

You need: A hundred square

Ourselves

Do: Animal families. Match each baby to its parent: cat and kitten, cow and calf, hen and chick, dog and puppy. Do all babies look like their parents?

Ready for School Routines
Week 1 of about 2

Do: Bag checklist. Every evening your child packs their bag using the checklist and ticks each item.

You need: A picture checklist: books, pencil case, water bottle, lunch box

Talk: What do you need to take tomorrow?
