Goal: Name body parts and the senses, compare how people are alike and different, and describe how humans and animals grow.

For parents: This is usually the first science unit in Class 1. Your child should be comfortable naming body parts, matching senses to organs, and talking about growing up.

Do together

  1. Life-size me

    You need: A big sheet of paper (tape newspapers together), a marker

    Your child lies down and you draw around them. They label the body parts: head, neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, ankle.

  2. Same and different

    You need: Family members

    Compare hand sizes, hair colour, eye colour and height. What is the same about everyone? What is different?

  3. Animal families

    You need: Pictures of animals and their young

    Match each baby to its parent: cat and kitten, cow and calf, hen and chick, dog and puppy. Do all babies look like their parents?

Talk about it

  • Which sense do you use to find out if food is hot?
  • How are you different from your brother or sister?
  • What is a baby cow called?
