Design a Fair Movement Game

Goal: Plan a movement game with a repeating action sequence, safe spaces and a fair way for everyone to take part.

For parents: An adult checks a clear, level, non-slip space and stays nearby. Keep targets low and use a large soft ball. Walking, hopping, rolling and seated reaching are choices, not ranks. Fair play may mean different distances or movements for different players.

Do together

  1. Choose three actions

    You need: Paper and crayons

Draw three actions for a game, such as step, pause and roll. Repeat that sequence twice together. Your child can choose seated reach, pause and roll instead. Decide how players show they are ready before receiving a ball.

  2. Arrange the play space

You need: A large soft ball and a checked open cardboard box

Place the target on the floor. Ask your child to describe a safe waiting place beside or behind it, clear of the ball's route. Practise taking turns from a nearby spot. Move the waiting place if it gets in the way.

  3. Try a fair change

You need: The same game space

Play one turn each without counting winners. Ask whether everyone could take part comfortably. Change one thing, such as moving the target nearer or allowing a roll instead of a throw. Repeat the action sequence and discuss whether the change helped.

Talk about it

  • What is our repeating action sequence?
  • Where can the next player wait safely?
  • What change would help both players join in?
