Neat Handwriting

Goal: Write all small and capital letters the right size, sitting on the line, with even spaces.

For parents: Class 1 workbooks expect letters of the right height. Lower-case letters fall into three groups: tall letters (b, d, f, h, k, l, t), short letters (a, c, e, i, m, n, o, r, s, u, v, w, x, z) and letters with tails below the line (g, j, p, q, y). A few lines a day is better than a full page; stop before your child's hand gets tired.

Do together

  1. Three-line paper

    You need: Lined paper with a middle line drawn in

    Sort lower-case letters into tall letters, short letters and letters with tails below the line. Try a few from each group, checking where they touch the lines.

  2. Copy a poem

    You need: The poem of the week

    Copy two lines of the poem neatly, then illustrate it. Put it on the wall.

  3. Letter families practice

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Choose two or three letters with a similar movement, such as c, a and d. Model the starting point and direction. Let your child try each a few times, then choose one they find easy to read. Stop before their hand becomes tired.

Talk about it

  • Which letters are tall?
  • Which letters have a tail that goes below the line?
  • Is your writing easy for someone else to read?
