Numbers to 100: Tens and Ones

Goal: Count to 100, show a number as tens and ones, and compare and order numbers.

For parents: Place value — that 47 means 4 tens and 7 ones — is the key idea of Class 1 maths. Bundles of ten sticks make it something your child can hold.

Do together

  1. Straw bundles

    You need: Straws or ice-cream sticks, rubber bands

    Count out sticks and band every ten together. Show 35: three bundles and five loose. Now show 53. What changed?

  2. Greater or smaller

    You need: Number cards 0–9

    Each of you makes a two-digit number from two cards. Whose is bigger? Compare the tens first.

  3. Number patterns

    You need: A hundred square

    Start at 3 and jump 10 each time: 3, 13, 23… What stays the same? Then try counting back in tens.

  • How many tens are in 60?
  • Which is greater, 38 or 83? How do you know?
  • What number is 10 more than 45?
