Do: Feelings detective. After reading, ask how a character felt at the start and at the end, and what clues in the words or pictures tell you.

Do: Give the useful details. Plan a small display of drawings for someone at home. Agree where and when, perhaps at the table after lunch today. Your child writes one or two sentences inviting the reader. Help include the activity, place and time without adding a long story.

Do: Egg-box arrays. Look at the rows and columns: 2 rows of 6, or 6 columns of 2. Both make 12.

Science & our world
Do: Sound map. Sit with an adult in a safe spot outside or by a window. Draw yourself in the middle and mark sounds in the direction they seem to come from. Discuss which sound sources you can actually see. A loud sound is not always near.

Talk: How do we protect our ears from very loud sounds?

Thinking & feelings
Do: Reply without changing their mind. Choose a drawing each and explain why you like it. Model, "I like the other one because..." Listen to the whole reply. Your child may agree or differ. There is no need to vote, persuade or choose one picture for everyone.

Moving & making
Do: Make a repeating group. Draw two chosen actions and a pause, such as jump, step, pause. Repeat this group twice, then ask what comes next. Use seated actions if preferred. Let your child change one action and show the new repeating group. Finish with both people steady.
