Step, Hop and Repeat

Goal: Build and repeat a short movement pattern, adapting jumps or skipping steps for comfort.

For parents: Clear a level, non-slip space and stay nearby. Use small movements, no ropes, obstacles or races. A skipping step is a step then a small hop on the same foot, alternating feet. Walking, supported steps and seated hand actions are full alternatives. Stop for pain, tiredness or discomfort.

Do together

  1. Choose a comfortable action

You need: A clear floor space

Show a small two-foot jump and soft landing, then let your child choose whether to try. Offer a hand for a supported step instead. Seated players can lift and lower both hands. Pause between attempts and choose a movement that feels comfortable.

  2. Step then hop

You need: The same clear space

Slowly model stepping onto one foot, then a small hop on that foot. Repeat on the other side for a skipping step. Your child can walk the steps or alternate hand lifts while seated. There is no need for speed or a continuous skip.

  3. Make a repeating group

    You need: Paper and crayons

Draw two chosen actions and a pause, such as jump, step, pause. Repeat this group twice, then ask what comes next. Use seated actions if preferred. Let your child change one action and show the new repeating group. Finish with both people steady.

Talk about it

  • Which action feels comfortable today?
  • What is our whole repeating group?
  • What comes after the pause when we repeat?
