Different Opinions Can Stay Different

Goal: Share a preference with a reason, consider feelings and reply kindly to a different opinion.

For parents: An opinion tells what someone thinks or prefers. Two people can like different things without needing one winner or a shared decision. Listen without teasing or demanding agreement. Keep examples about drawings and pretend choices, not people's bodies, families or identities.

Do together

  1. Two favourite pictures

    You need: Paper and crayons

Draw a pretend bus and garden. Invent two characters: Ali likes the bus's wheels; Mia likes the garden's colours. Say each preference with a reason. Ask how each might feel if their choice were laughed at. Both preferences can stay.

  2. Reply without changing their mind

    You need: The two drawings

Choose a drawing each and explain why you like it. Model, "I like the other one because..." Listen to the whole reply. Your child may agree or differ. There is no need to vote, persuade or choose one picture for everyone.

  3. A kind response

    You need: Paper and crayons

Draw a character saying, "Your favourite is silly." Ask how the listener might feel. Together replace the words with a kind reply that still allows a different preference. Act it out. Changing an unkind reply need not mean changing the opinion.

Talk about it

  • What is your reason for liking that picture?
  • Can we both keep our different favourites?
  • How might that reply make the listener feel?
