Goal: Read and perform short poems, talk about stories and say how characters feel.
For parents: Poems are the best reading practice there is: short, rhythmic and worth reading again. Read the same poem every day for a week until your child can perform it.

Poem of the week
You need: A short poem (from a book or written out)Read it together every day. Clap its rhythm, find the rhyming words, and on Friday your child performs it for the family.

Feelings detective
You need: A story bookAfter reading, ask how a character felt at the start and at the end, and what clues in the words or pictures tell you.

Real or made up?
You need: A few story books and a few fact booksLook at the covers together. Sort them into stories (made up) and information books (true). How can you tell?
Talk about it
- Which words rhyme in this poem?
- What was your favourite part of the story? Why?
- Is this book a story or does it tell us facts?
