Reading & talking
Do: Rhyme time with actions. Say one nursery rhyme every day this week with actions (Twinkle Twinkle, Humpty Dumpty, Five Little Ducks). By the end, pause on the last word of a line and let them fill it in.
You need: Nothing
Talk: Which animal says 'moo'? 'Quack'? 'Baa'?

Writing & pencil control
Do: Tear and stick. Tear paper into pieces bigger than your child's palm and let them tear some too. Stick them onto a big shape you have drawn: a sun, a fish, a tree. Stay beside them and put the scraps away when you finish.
You need: Old newspaper or coloured paper, a glue stick, a big sheet of paper
Talk: What did you draw? Tell me about it.

Numbers & shapes
Do: Colour of the day. Choose a colour each morning: wear something that colour, find a fruit or vegetable that colour, and look for it on the way to the shop.
You need: Clothes and food you already have
Talk: What colour is a banana? The sky? Grass?

Science & our world
Do: Hand and foot prints. Draw around their hand and foot. Count the fingers and toes together, then let them colour them in. Put it on the wall with their name.
You need: Paper, a pencil, washable paint or crayons
Talk: Can you wiggle your fingers? Stamp your feet? Nod your head?

Thinking & feelings
Do: My turn, your turn. Roll a ball back and forth saying 'my turn, your turn'. Build a tower one block each. Praise waiting: 'You waited for your turn!'
You need: A ball, or blocks for a tower
Talk: What can we do when we feel sad?

A possible rhythm: one strand a day, Monday to Friday, or fewer days. Swap days freely. Games are optional and never replace the home activity.
