One activity for each strand this week. Do them on the days that suit you, repeat any you enjoy, and skip what doesn't fit. Each strand moves through its own units at its own pace.

Reading & talking

Sounds Around Us
Week 1 of about 2

Do: Listening walk. Stop, be very quiet for ten seconds, then whisper 'What did you hear?' A bird, a car, the fan, a door. Point to where each sound came from.

You need: A walk outside or around the house

Talk: Is that sound loud or quiet?

Busy Fingers
Week 1 of about 3

Do: Dough play. Sit together at a table. Squeeze it, roll it into snakes, pinch it and poke holes with a finger. Stay beside your child: dough is for hands, not mouths. Avoid raw flour dough, and wash hands afterwards.

You need: A ball of play dough, or homemade dough that has been cooked

Talk: Can you make rain lines? Can you make a big circle?

Numbers & shapes

Colours Everywhere
Week 1 of about 2

Do: Colour hunt basket. An adult chooses a few safe, large objects of one colour, such as whole socks and unbreakable cups. Find them together and name the colour with each object. Leave other household items where they are.

You need: A basket or bag

Talk: Can you find something the same colour as this?

Hello, Me!
Week 1 of about 2

Do: Head, shoulders, knees and toes. Sing it slowly and touch each part together. Next time, stop before a word and let your child say it — and touch it.

You need: Nothing

Talk: What do we use our eyes for? Our ears? Our hands?

Thinking & feelings

Happy, Sad, Cross
Week 1 of about 2

Do: Feelings faces. Make a happy face, a sad face, a cross face, a surprised face in the mirror together. Ask your child to show you one; you guess which.

You need: A mirror

A possible rhythm: one strand a day, Monday to Friday, or fewer days. Swap days freely. Games are optional and never replace the home activity.
