Colours Everywhere

Goal: Match things of the same colour and start naming red, blue, yellow and green.

For parents: Matching comes before naming. If your child can put all the red blocks together but calls them 'blue', they are right on track.

Do together

  1. Colour hunt basket

    You need: A basket or bag

    Pick one colour for the day. Walk around the house and put everything of that colour in the basket. Tip it out and name each thing: 'a red cup, a red sock'.

  2. Sorting bowls

    You need: Three bowls, a handful of large coloured objects (blocks, lids, socks)

    Put one object of each colour in a bowl to start it off. Your child sorts the rest into the matching bowls. Mix them up and do it again.

  3. Colour of the day

    You need: Clothes and food you already have

    Choose a colour each morning: wear something that colour, find a fruit or vegetable that colour, and look for it on the way to the shop.

Talk about it

  • Can you find something the same colour as this?
  • What colour is a banana? The sky? Grass?
  • Which colour do you like best?
