Look at a Book

Goal: Enjoy picture books: hold a book the right way, turn pages, point to pictures and name what they see.

For parents: Reading to a toddler is not about finishing the book. Pointing, naming and chatting about the pictures builds more language than reading every word.

Do together

  1. Point and name

    You need: A picture book with large, clear pictures

    Ask 'Where is the dog?' and let your child point. Then point to something and wait for them to name it. Praise every try.

  2. Book basket

    You need: A low basket, four or five books

    Keep books where your child can reach them. Let them choose the bedtime book each night, even if it is the same one every time.

  3. My own photo book

    You need: Family photos, paper, glue or a small album

    Make a book with one photo per page: Ammi, Abba, Dadi, the cat. Look at it together and say each name.

  • What can you see on this page?

  • Which page do you like best?
