Little Pretend Conversations

Goal: Join a short pretend conversation using actions or words to make a request and respond to a feeling.

For parents: Follow your child's idea and use the languages you speak at home. A look, gesture or sound can take a turn in the conversation. Use large, unbreakable props with no loose parts and stay with your child.

Do together

  1. Teddy asks for a cup

You need: A large soft toy and two unbreakable cups

Pretend teddy asks for a cup. Offer your child a turn to give teddy one or ask you for one. Reply to gestures as well as words. Keep the cups empty; this is a pretend drink.

  2. A welcome for Sara

    You need: The soft toy

Give the toy a pretend name, such as Sara. Say that Sara feels shy about joining the game. Ask your child how to welcome her. Wave, say hello or move a cup closer. Let your child decide how Sara responds.

  3. Your turn to ask

You need: The two cups and toy

Let your child lead a short pretend visit. Pause so they can ask for a prop, offer you something or show what should happen. Respond with a short phrase, such as 'A cup for me, thank you.' Finish when they lose interest.
