Animal Friends

Goal: Name common animals, copy their sounds and movements, and say where some of them live.

For parents: Animals are the most motivating topic there is for toddlers. Use it for talking: every new animal is a new word.

Do together

  1. Who says that?

    You need: Nothing, or animal toys or pictures

    Make an animal sound and let your child guess the animal. Then let them make the sound and you guess.

  2. Animal walks

    You need: Some space

    Hop like a frog, waddle like a duck, stomp like an elephant, slither like a snake. Call out an animal and both do its walk.

  3. Animal picture book

    You need: Paper and a thick intact crayon used with an adult

    An adult draws a large simple animal on each page. Look together, name it and try its sound. Your child can add marks while you supervise. Keep loose scraps and broken crayons out of reach.

Talk about it

  • Which animal is the biggest? The smallest?
  • Where does a fish live? A bird?
  • Which animals have we seen outside our house?
