Day and Night

Goal: Notice the difference between day and night and talk about what we do at each time.

For parents: A calm, repeated bedtime routine is also this unit's best lesson: children learn time through what happens next, not clocks.

Do together

  1. Sun and moon walk

You need: A window or a short walk

Look outside in the morning and again after dark. Is it light or dark? Can you see the sun or the moon?

  2. Bedtime picture chart

You need: Paper and simple drawings

Draw your bedtime steps: bath, pyjamas, teeth, story, sleep. Follow the chart each night and point to each step.

  3. Torch time

You need: A torch, a dark room

Turn off the light and explore with a torch. What can you see now? Turn the light back on. What changed?

Talk about it

  • Is it day or night now? How do you know?
  • What do we do at night?
  • What do you see in the sky at night?
