Shapes Around Us

Goal: Name a circle, square, triangle and rectangle, and find them in everyday things.

For parents: Show shapes in different sizes and turned different ways. A triangle upside down is still a triangle — children often think it is not.

Do together

  1. Shape hunt

    You need: The house

    Plates and clocks are circles, windows and doors are rectangles, a slice of pizza or a samosa is a triangle. Hunt for one shape at a time.

  2. Stick shapes

    You need: Straws, ice-cream sticks or sticks from outside

    Make a triangle with three sticks and a square with four. Count the sides together. Can they make a house from a square and a triangle?

  3. Shape snack

    You need: Roti, bread or a sandwich

    Cut it into triangles one day and squares the next. Name the shape before each bite.
