Notice One, Two or Three

Goal: Begin to recognise groups of one, two or three without counting each item, then check by counting.

For parents: Recognising a small quantity at a glance is sometimes called subitising. Start with one or two and keep the objects visible. Counting is always welcome; do not make this a speed test or hide the group before your child is ready.

Do together

  1. What do you notice?

    You need: Three large spoons

Lay out one or two spoons. Ask how many your child thinks there are. Touch each spoon together to check. Try three only when they want more. Notice a direct answer without insisting that they avoid counting.

  2. Same group, new shape

    You need: The same spoons

Place three spoons in a row, then move them into a loose triangle while your child watches. Ask whether the amount changed. Count to check. Repeat with two spoons close together and further apart.

  3. Make a matching group

You need: Three large paper squares and three large spoons

Show one, two or three paper squares. Ask your child to put out the same number of spoons. Pair each spoon with a square to check. Swap roles so your child chooses a group for you to match.
