Our week: Nursery, week 6
Dates: to · Try one activity on a day that suits you. Repeat or pause any part.
Reading & talking
Do: Silly rhymes. Make up nonsense rhymes at mealtimes: 'rice, mice, dice, fice!' Nonsense words count — the point is hearing the same ending.
You need: Nothing
Talk: Can you think of a word that rhymes with bee?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Rhyme Families
Writing & pencil control
Do: A place for my picture. Invite your child to draw something they enjoyed. Ask whether they would like to add a mark for their name. They may use a familiar letter, a line or another mark. Ask them to tell you about both the picture and their name mark.
You need: Paper and crayons
Talk: Who is your message for?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Trace It
Numbers & shapes
Do: Make a matching group. Show one, two or three paper squares. Ask your child to put out the same number of spoons. Pair each spoon with a square to check. Swap roles so your child chooses a group for you to match.
You need: Three large paper squares and three large spoons
Talk: Did moving the spoons change how many we have?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Ten-Frame Fill
Science & our world
Do: Wind test. Take it outside. Is it blowing a lot, a little, or not at all? Is it windy today?
You need: A ribbon or strip of paper tied to a stick
Talk: What should we wear in the rain?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Weather Watch
Thinking & feelings
Do: Pretend play. Play doctor, shopkeeper, teacher or cook. Swap roles. Talk about what each helper does and how they help us.
You need: Household things as props
Talk: Who helps us when we are ill?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Helper Heroes
Moving & making
Do: Loose-paper collage. Explain that a collage is a picture made by putting pieces together. Arrange the pieces on the sheet to show a home, a mango tree or an idea your child chooses. Overlap some pieces and move them around. Describe their choices; there is no need to stick them down.
You need: A sheet of paper and the large torn pieces
Talk: Which shape shall we move in your picture?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Shape Builder
A possible rhythm: one or two strands a day, on the days that suit you. Swap days freely. Games are optional and never replace the home activity.
