Numbers to Ten

Goal: Count up to 10 objects accurately and recognise the numerals 1 to 10.

For parents: Watch for skipped or double-counted objects. Lining things up and moving each one as you count fixes most counting mistakes.

Do together

  1. Egg-box counting

    You need: An egg box, pasta pieces or buttons (large ones), a marker

    Write 1 to 6 (later 1 to 10 with two boxes) in the cups. Your child puts the right number of pasta pieces in each cup.

  2. Number walk

    You need: A walk outside

    Look for numbers on doors, buses, number plates and price tags. Read each one together. Who can find a 7?

  3. Count and jump

    You need: Nothing

    Hold up fingers or a number card. Your child jumps, claps or hops that many times while you count together.

Talk about it

  • How many spoons are on the table?
  • What number comes after 4?
  • Is 8 more than 3?
