Money and Shopping

Goal: Recognise coins, count small amounts and pay in a pretend shop.

For parents: Use your country's money (for example, rupees). An adult selects a few current coins or draws large pretend versions. Supervise real coins and keep them away from younger children. Talk about each coin's value rather than assuming that a larger coin is worth more.

Do together

  1. Coin sort

    You need: A handful of coins

    Sort coins into piles by value. Talk about their size, colour and the picture on each.

  2. Home shop

    You need: Packets from the kitchen, price labels (1 to 10), coins

    Take turns as shopkeeper and customer. An item priced at 5 can be paid for with amounts worth 5 altogether, such as one 5 or five 1s. Use suitable local coins or large pretend amount cards.

  3. Piggy bank count

    You need: A money box

    Once a week, count what is inside. Count the 1s first, then add the 2s and 5s.

  • Do you have enough to buy this?
