Money and Shopping

Goal: Recognise coins, count small amounts and pay in a pretend shop.

For parents: Use your own country's real coins (in Pakistan, 1, 2, 5 and 10 rupee coins). Let your child handle them — with supervision, as coins are a choking risk for younger siblings.

Do together

  1. Coin sort

    You need: A handful of coins

    Sort coins into piles by value. Talk about their size, colour and the picture on each.

  2. Home shop

    You need: Packets from the kitchen, price labels (1 to 10), coins

    Your child is the shopkeeper, then the customer. Pay the exact amount: a 5 costs one 5 coin — or five 1 coins.

  3. Piggy bank count

    You need: A money box

    Once a week, count what is inside. Count the 1s first, then add the 2s and 5s.
