Do: Sound hunt basket. Collect objects that start with the day's sound: m — mug, mat, mango. Check each by saying it slowly: 'mmm-ug'.

Do: Rainbow letters. Write one letter large. Your child traces over it in five different colours, starting at the dot each time.

Do: Two egg boxes. Fill one box of ten completely, then add more to the second: 'Ten and three is thirteen.'
You need: Two egg boxes (or cups cut into 10s), small objects

Do: Clean-hands routine. Make a picture chart of the handwashing steps and stick it by the sink. Sing a short song while scrubbing.

Do: Jigsaw time. Start with the corners and edges. Talk about how you choose where a piece goes.
You need: A 12- to 24-piece jigsaw, or a picture cut into pieces
