Letter Sounds: s a t p i n m d

Goal: Say the sound for eight letters and hear them at the start of words.

For parents: Teach two or three new sounds a week and review the old ones every day. Short and often beats long and rare: five minutes a day is plenty.

Do together

  1. Sound of the day

    You need: A letter card on the fridge

    Choose one sound each day. Say it at breakfast, find three things that start with it before lunch, and write the letter together in the evening.

  2. Sound hunt basket

    You need: A basket

    Collect objects that start with the day's sound: m — mug, mat, mango. Check each by saying it slowly: 'mmm-ug'.

  3. Big and small letters

    You need: Paper cards with capital and small letters

    Make pairs (S and s, A and a, T and t) and play a matching game face-down. Say the sound when you find a pair.

Talk about it

  • What sound does 'mango' start with?
  • Which of these starts with d: dog, cat or pen?
  • Can you think of a word that starts with n?
