Forming Letters

Goal: Form small letters correctly, starting in the right place, and write their first name.

For parents: Where a letter starts matters more than how neat it looks. Teach letters in families that move the same way: c a d g o q (round), l t i j (down), r n m h b p (bridge).

Do together

  1. Sky writing

    You need: Nothing

    Write a big letter in the air with a straight arm, saying how it moves: 'c — over the top and round'. Then write it small on paper.

  2. Rainbow letters

    You need: Paper, several crayons

    Write one letter large. Your child traces over it in five different colours, starting at the dot each time.

  3. Name card

    You need: A card with their name, paper

    Copy their name under the model every day this week. Only the first letter is a capital.

  • Where does 'c' start?
  • Which letters go round like 'c'?
  • Which letter in your name is the tallest?
