Telling the Time: O'clock and Half Past

Goal: Read and show o'clock and half past times, and link times to the day's events.

For parents: For half past, the long hand points straight down to 6 and the short hand is halfway between two numbers. Use a real clock with hands, not just a phone.

Do together

  1. Time of the day

You need: A clock with hands

At every o'clock and half past today, stop and read the clock together. What are we doing at this time?

  2. My day timetable

You need: Paper, a clock stamp or drawn clock faces

Make a table: activity and time. Wake up — 7 o'clock. School — half past 7. Draw the clock for each.

  3. Make my time

You need: The paper-plate clock from KG 2

Call out a time and your child sets the clock. Then they call out one for you.

Talk about it

  • Where does the long hand point at half past?
  • What do you usually do at 1 o'clock?
  • Is 7 o'clock in the morning or the evening?
