Halves, Quarters and Turns

Goal: Find halves and quarters of shapes and amounts, and make half, quarter and whole turns.

For parents: A half is one of two equal parts of a whole. A quarter is one of four equal parts. Fold paper and compare the sections so your child can see why equal parts matter. Then use equal groups of paper squares to explore halves and quarters of a collection.

Do together

  1. Fold and compare

    You need: Paper squares and crayons

    Fold a paper square into two equal parts, then fold again to make four equal parts. Open it and colour one quarter. Compare the equal sections. Try a different first fold on another square.

  2. Half of a group

    You need: Eight large paper squares and two sheets of paper

    Share the eight squares equally between the two sheets. Each equal group is half of the whole set. Count four on each. Repeat with six squares, then use four places to share eight into quarters.

  3. Turning game

    You need: Some space

    Stand facing the door. Make a quarter turn clockwise (the way clock hands move). A half turn. A whole turn. Now anticlockwise. What are you facing now?

  • Are these two parts equal? Is it a half?
  • How many quarters are in a whole?
  • Which way is clockwise?
