Halves, Quarters and Turns

Goal: Find halves and quarters of shapes and amounts, and make half, quarter and whole turns.

For parents: A half means two EQUAL parts. Cutting food is perfect practice — and fixes the classic mistake of calling the bigger piece 'the bigger half'.

Do together

  1. Fold and cut

    You need: Paper squares and circles, scissors

    Fold a square into halves two different ways. Fold again to make quarters. Colour one quarter.

  2. Roti quarters

    You need: A roti or a sandwich

    Cut it into halves, then quarters. Are the pieces equal? How many quarters make a half? A whole?

  3. Turning game

    You need: Some space

    Stand facing the door. Make a quarter turn clockwise (the way clock hands move). A half turn. A whole turn. Now anticlockwise. What are you facing now?

  • Are these two parts equal? Is it a half?
  • How many quarters are in a whole?
  • Which way is clockwise?
