Coins and Notes

Goal: Recognise coins and notes, count money, exchange coins for notes, and solve simple shopping problems.

For parents: Use your own currency. In Pakistan that is 1, 2, 5 and 10 rupee coins and 10, 20, 50 and 100 rupee notes. Real money in a pretend shop teaches more than any worksheet.

Do together

  1. Exchange desk

    You need: Coins and notes

    Swap coins for a note of the same value: two 5s for a 10 note, five 10s for a 50. How many different ways can you make 20?

  2. Toy shop

    You need: Toys with price tags up to 100

    Your child buys two things. How much altogether? Pay with a 100 note: how much change?

  3. Real shopping

    You need: A trip to a small shop

    Give your child a note to pay for one item. Before paying, guess the change; afterwards, count it together.

Talk about it

  • Which is worth more, three 10 coins or a 20 note?
  • How much change will you get?
  • Can you buy both with 50 rupees?
