Plants and Animals

Goal: Sort living and non-living things, tell plants from animals, and observe and care for a plant.

For parents: Living things grow and need suitable conditions to live. Plants make their own food using light; they also need water and air. Moving by itself is not a reliable test: a car can move but is not alive.

Do together

  1. Is it alive?

    You need: A walk outside, a notebook

    Make two lists: living and not living. A tree, a stone, a cat, a car, a flower, a cloud. Talk about the hard ones.

  2. Watch a plant change

    You need: A plant already growing at home, paper and a pencil

    With an adult, choose a safe plant to observe without tasting or pulling off parts. Draw it every few days and compare what changes. Help water it as appropriate for that plant. Wash hands after handling soil or the pot.

  3. Plants we eat

    You need: Vegetables and fruit from the kitchen

    Which part of the plant is it? Carrot — root, spinach — leaf, potato — underground stem, apple — fruit, peas — seeds.

Talk about it

  • How do you know a plant is alive?
  • What would happen to a plant with no water?
  • Which parts of plants do we eat?
