Materials and Magnets

Goal: Describe how materials feel, say what things are made of, and test which things a magnet attracts.

For parents: A cheap fridge magnet is a whole science kit. Let your child predict, test and record — the recording is what turns play into science.

Do together

  1. Magnet test

    You need: A magnet, objects: spoon, coin, paper clip, pencil, key, foil, button

    Predict first, then test. Record ticks and crosses in a table. Surprise: not all metals stick!

  2. Magnet fishing

    You need: Paper fish with paper clips, a magnet on a string

    Catch fish that have letters, words or sums written on them. Read or solve to keep the fish.

  3. Texture hunt

    You need: The house

    Find something rough, smooth, soft, hard, bendy and stiff. What is each one made of?

Talk about it

  • Why do you think the spoon stuck but the foil didn't?
  • What is a window made of? Why is that a good material for it?
  • Can you find something bendy and something stiff?
