Odd and Even Numbers

Goal: Sort numbers to 20 into odd and even, and spot odd and even patterns to 100.

For parents: Even means 'everyone gets a partner'. Pairing objects makes the idea visible before any rule is learned.

Do together

  1. Partner test

    You need: Counters or buttons

    Take 7 counters and pair them up. Is one left without a partner? Then 7 is odd. Test every number to 12.

  2. Odd and even houses

    You need: A walk down your street

    Look at house numbers. Which side has the odd numbers? Which has the even?

  3. Hundred-square colouring

    You need: A hundred square

    Colour every even number. What pattern do you see? What digits do even numbers end in?

Talk about it

  • Is 9 odd or even? How do you know?
  • What do all even numbers end with?
  • If you add two odd numbers, what do you get?
