Sharing and Grouping (Division)

Goal: Share things equally between people and put things into equal groups.

For parents: Children understand fair sharing long before division. Use real sharing — sweets, toys, cherries on cupcakes — and let them check it is fair.

Do together

  1. Fair share

    You need: 12 small objects, 2, 3 or 4 plates

    Share the objects equally between the plates, one at a time: one for you, one for you… How many on each plate? Is it fair?

  2. Boxes needed

    You need: 20 pasta pieces, cups

    Put 5 in each cup. How many cups do we need? Now 4 in each cup. Did we need more or fewer cups?

  3. Leftovers

    You need: 13 sweets, 3 plates

    Share them fairly. What happens to the one left over? Talk about 'remainder'.

  • How can we share these fairly?
  • If 3 friends share 15 sweets, how many does each get?
  • What do we do with the ones left over?
