Colours and Shiny Things

Goal: Mix colours, find shiny things and see how mirrors and bubbles reflect light.

For parents: Light bouncing off things is why we see them. Mirrors and spoons are the easiest way to show a young child that light reflects.

Do together

  1. Colour mixing

    You need: Paint or food colouring in red, yellow and blue, water, clear cups

    Mix two colours at a time. Red + yellow = ? Blue + yellow = ? Record the results with blobs of paint.

  2. Spoon faces

    You need: A shiny spoon

    Look at your face in the front and the back of the spoon. Why is it upside down on one side?

  3. Bubble colours

    You need: Soap, water, a straw or a bent wire loop

    Blow bubbles in the sunlight. What colours can you see on the bubble? Where do they come from?

  • Which things in this room are shiny?
  • What colour do red and blue make?
  • Why can you see yourself in a mirror?
