Colours and Shiny Things

Goal: Mix colours, compare shiny and dull surfaces and explore reflections in a spoon.

For parents: Light bouncing off things is why we see them. Mirrors and spoons are the easiest way to show a young child that light reflects.

Do together

  1. Colour mixing

    You need: Paint or food colouring in red, yellow and blue, water, clear cups

    Mix two colours at a time. Red + yellow = ? Blue + yellow = ? Record the results with blobs of paint.

  2. Spoon faces

    You need: A shiny spoon

    Look at your face in the front and the back of the spoon. Why is it upside down on one side?

  3. Shiny surface picture

    You need: An intact shiny spoon and paper

    With an adult, look at reflections in each side of the spoon and compare them with the dull paper. Keep the spoon away from eyes and do not reflect sunlight into anyone's face. Draw something you noticed.

  • Which things in this room are shiny?
  • What colour do red and blue make?
  • Why can you see yourself in a mirror?
