Shapes to Post

Goal: Match shapes to holes and outlines, and start to name a circle.

For parents: Fitting shapes into holes teaches children to notice edges and corners, long before they know shape names. Let them try, turn and try again before you help.

Do together

  1. Posting box

    You need: A cardboard box with a round hole and a square hole cut in the lid, lids and small blocks to post

    Show how a lid fits through the round hole. Let your child post everything, turning the shapes to make them fit.

  2. Shadow match

    You need: Paper, a pencil, three or four kitchen objects (cup, spoon, lid)

    Draw around each object on paper. Your child matches each object to its outline.

  3. Circle hunt

    You need: The house

    Find round things together: a plate, a clock, a ball, a roti. Trace round each one with a finger and say 'circle'.

Talk about it

  • Does it fit? Can you turn it?
  • Which hole is round?
  • Can you find another circle?
