Shapes to Post

Goal: Match shapes to holes and outlines, and start to name a circle.

For parents: Fitting shapes into holes teaches children to notice edges and corners, long before they know shape names. Let them try, turn and try again before you help.

Do together

  1. Posting box

    You need: An open cardboard box and large cardboard shapes prepared by an adult

    An adult prepares smooth-edged round and square openings and large matching shapes, removing staples and scraps. Stay beside your child as they turn and post the shapes. Use pieces too large to fit in the mouth and remove anything that is mouthed or damaged.

  2. Shadow match

    You need: Paper, a pencil, an unbreakable cup and two large spoons

    Draw around each object on paper. Your child matches each object to its outline.

  3. Circle hunt

    You need: The house

    Find flat circular faces together, such as the face of a clock or an unbreakable plate. Trace a circle in the air. Compare a ball: it is round too, but it is a solid object, not a flat circle.

Talk about it

  • Does it fit? Can you turn it?
  • Which hole is round?
  • Can you find another circle?
