Same and Different

Goal: Find two things that are the same and spot one that is different.

For parents: Matching pairs is the root of sorting, memory and later reading, where children must tell letters like b and d apart.

Do together

  1. Sock pairs

    You need: Clean socks

    Mix up four or five pairs of socks. Your child finds each pair. Then hide one sock: which one has no partner?

  2. Snap with cards

    You need: Picture cards, or two copies of simple drawings

    Turn cards over one at a time. When two are the same, say 'Snap!' together.

  3. Odd one out tray

    You need: A tray, three spoons and one cup

    Which one is different? Swap the items and play again: three apples and a ball, three cars and a shoe.
