Copy a Simple Pattern
Goal: Notice and join in with a short pattern that repeats two actions or objects.
For parents: A pattern is something that repeats in the same order. Begin by copying two actions together. There is no need to name a rule or keep a long sequence in mind.
Do together
-
Tap and clap
You need: NothingTap your knees, then clap gently. Repeat slowly while your child watches. Invite them to join in for one or two repeats. They may copy just one action first. Adapt the movements so both are comfortable.
-
Spoon, sock
You need: Two large spoons and two whole socksMake a short row: spoon, sock, spoon, sock. Point and name each item. Let your child help rebuild the row beside you. Use clean, unbreakable household items and supervise throughout.
-
What comes with me?
You need: The same spoons and socksStart with spoon, sock, spoon. Offer the remaining sock and another large spoon and ask what could come next. If your child is unsure, point along the row and name it together. Stop after a few playful turns.
Talk about it
- Can you copy my tap and clap?
- What do we see after the spoon?
- Shall we do that little pattern again?
