Our week: Playgroup, week 1
Dates: to · Try one activity on a day that suits you. Repeat or pause any part.
Reading & talking
Do: Listening walk. Stop, be very quiet for ten seconds, then whisper 'What did you hear?' A bird, a car, the fan, a door. Point to where each sound came from.
You need: A walk outside or around the house
Talk: Is that sound loud or quiet?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Rhyme Families
Writing & pencil control
Do: Dough play. Sit together at a table. Squeeze it, roll it into snakes, pinch it and poke holes with a finger. Stay beside your child: dough is for hands, not mouths. Avoid raw flour dough, and wash hands afterwards.
You need: A ball of play dough, or homemade dough that has been cooked
Talk: Can you make rain lines? Can you make a big circle?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Trace It
Numbers & shapes
Do: Colour hunt basket. An adult chooses a few safe, large objects of one colour, such as whole socks and unbreakable cups. Find them together and name the colour with each object. Leave other household items where they are.
You need: A basket or bag
Talk: Can you find something the same colour as this?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Shapes & Colors
Science & our world
Do: Head, shoulders, knees and toes. Sing it slowly and touch each part together. Next time, stop before a word and let your child say it — and touch it.
You need: Nothing
Talk: What do we use our eyes for? Our ears? Our hands?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Five Senses
Thinking & feelings
Do: Feelings faces. Make a happy face, a sad face, a cross face, a surprised face in the mirror together. Ask your child to show you one; you guess which.
You need: A mirror
Talk: What makes you happy?
We noticed:
Game (optional): Feelings Friends
A possible rhythm: one strand a day, Monday to Friday, or fewer days. Swap days freely. Games are optional and never replace the home activity.
