People and Places at Home

Goal: Recognise familiar people and home spaces, and match pictures that show the same familiar thing.

For parents: Use your child's names for carers and places. A home space can be used for several things. Drawings are enough; no photographs or private details are required. Use large sheets rather than small cards and supervise handling.

Do together

  1. People in our day

    You need: Paper and a crayon

    Draw simple pictures of two people your child knows, including carers who may live elsewhere. Name each together and talk about something they do with your child. Accept pointing or your child's own word for the person.

  2. Where we do things

    You need: Paper and a crayon

    Visit two familiar, safe spaces together, such as where you read and where you eat. Draw a simple book and cup on separate large sheets. Ask where each picture could belong. Accept both places if the family uses them for both activities.

  3. Find the familiar pair

    You need: Two large drawings of a cup and two of a book

    Put the four drawings face up. Help your child find two that show the same thing. Name a home space where you use each object. If they want another turn, cover one picture with your hand, then reveal it together; there is no memory test to pass.
