My Five Senses

Goal: Name the five senses and use describing words: soft, hard, loud, quiet, sweet, sour.

For parents: This is your child's first science: noticing and describing. Ask 'What do you notice?' more than 'What is it?'

Do together

  1. Feely bag

You need: A cloth bag, objects with different textures (sponge, spoon, cotton wool, a stone)

Your child feels an object without looking and describes it: soft or hard, smooth or rough. Then guesses what it is.

  2. Smell pots

You need: Small cups, mild smells (orange peel, mint, cinnamon, soap)

Cover the cups with a cloth. Smell each one: do you like it? Can you guess? Avoid chilli and strong spices near little noses.

  3. Taste test

You need: Tiny tastes: sugar, lemon, salt, yoghurt

Taste each one and find the word: sweet, sour, salty. Which one made a funny face?

Talk about it

  • Which part of your body do you use to smell? To hear?
  • What does this feel like?
  • What sound can you hear right now?
