Animals and Their Homes

Goal: Match animals to where they live and say what some animals eat.

For parents: Children love sorting animals. Each sort is a small science lesson: animals live where they can find food, water and shelter.

Do together

Animal homes sort
You need: Adult-drawn pictures of a fish, cow and familiar garden bird
Talk about where each animal finds food and shelter. A fish lives in water, a cow lives on land, and a garden bird may use trees and the ground. Explain that many birds make nests for eggs and chicks. One animal can use more than one place.
Bird watch
You need: A window or a safe place to sit with an adult
Watch birds without approaching, touching or feeding them. Count any you see. Notice whether they are on the ground, in a tree or flying. Leave nests alone.
Who eats what?
You need: Pictures of animals and foods (grass, bone, fish, seeds)
Match each animal to its food. A cow eats grass, a cat likes fish, a hen pecks seeds.
