Reading & talking
Do: Sound sort. Read each word and sort it into piles by its two-letter sound. Underline the two letters that stick together.
You need: Word cards: ship, shop, chip, chin, thin, moth, ring, sing
Talk: How many sounds are in 'ship'? (three: sh-i-p)

Do: Say it, count it, write it. Choose a sentence together ('I can run fast.'). Say it, count the words on fingers, then write it, leaving a finger space after each word.

Numbers & shapes
Do: One for each, again. Pretend Ali and Sara each need a share of the squares. Deal one to each plate, then repeat until none remain. Count each share and notice that the amounts match. Start with two squares if four feels too much.
You need: Four large paper squares and two drawn plates

Do: Umbrella test. Cover a cup with each material and pour a spoon of water on top. Which keeps the inside dry? Which would make a good umbrella?
You need: Squares of paper, cloth, plastic, foil; a cup; water

Thinking & feelings
Do: A plan for a paper bridge. On the floor, put the cups a short distance apart. Ask your child to plan a paper bridge between them. Let them point or draw before building. Check whether the paper reaches both cups without falling.
You need: Two low unbreakable cups and a sheet of scrap paper

Moving & making
Do: Over, under, over. Lay three strips side by side and hold their ends steady. Help your child pass the fourth strip over the first, under the second and over the third. Say the repeating rule together. Let one hand lift while the other guides.
You need: Three wide paper strips and one strip of a different colour or marked with crayon
