Writing a Sentence

Goal: Write a simple sentence with a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop.

For parents: Say the sentence out loud first, count the words on fingers, then write one word at a time. Accept phonetic spelling ('I lik to plai') — it shows they are hearing the sounds.

Do together

  1. Say it, count it, write it

    You need: Paper, pencil

    Choose a sentence together ('I can run fast.'). Say it, count the words on fingers, then write it, leaving a finger space after each word.

  2. Caption the photo

    You need: A family photo or a drawing

    Your child writes one sentence under it: 'We went to the park.'

  3. Shopping list

    You need: A notepad

    Before going to the shop, your child writes the list. Use it in the shop and tick off each item.

  • What does every sentence start with?
  • How many words are in your sentence?
  • Where does the full stop go?
